The State of Esports in Malaysia

This study examines the current state of Malaysia's esports industry, focusing on its ecosystem, key stakeholders, economic contribution and factors influencing its long-term growth and sustainability. It also explores gamer behaviour and market trends to provide a comprehensive understanding of how the industry functions and to support evidence-based policymaking. The findings show that Malaysia's esports ecosystem has matured significantly, driven by a growing digital population, active community participation, government support and increasing international recognition. The Malaysian esports market is projected to grow from USD 6.8 million in 2024 to USD 18.9 million by 2032, reflecting strong commercial potential and positioning esports as an emerging contributor to the country's digital economy..

Despite this progress, the industry faces several structural challenges that may hinder sustainable growth. These include an over-reliance on sponsorship as the primary source of funding, fragmented governance across multiple stakeholders, limited education and talent development pathways, inadequate legal and player protection frameworks, and the need for greater inclusivity and sustainable industry practices. To strengthen Malaysia's position as a regional esports hub, this study recommends improving governance and stakeholder coordination, diversifying revenue models, developing formal education and career pathways, enhancing legislation and player welfare, encouraging sustainable practices, and promoting greater public awareness of esports' economic and social value. Through coordinated efforts across government, industry, and the community, Malaysia is well-positioned to build a competitive, inclusive, and sustainable esports ecosystem.
